TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Virginia Tech men’s tennis team notched 11 wins in singles action during the second day of competition at the Crimson Tide Fall Championships in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
In the singles main draw, Marko Lovrinovic advanced to the finals of the Stabler Draw. Lovrinovic defeated Boston College’s Matt Wagner, 6-2, 6-1 in the first match of the day. In the semifinals, Lovrinovic secured a 6-1, 7-6(6) decision over Tulane’s Rodrigo Rappaccioli. The Hokie’s player will face South Alabama’s Cody Hall in the finals on Sunday.
Tech’s Lucas Oliveira picked up a big win over No. 50 Idan Mark of Tulane, beating the Green Wave player in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4. In Oliveira’s second singles match of the Bryant Draw, he fell to Wake Forest’s Danny Kreyman, 7-6(6), 6-3.
Jonathan Pine notched a win for the Hokies in the Ingram main draw, defeating Roger Irigoyen of Davidson, 6-2, 6-2. The Tech player faced Furman’s Tyler Droll in the semifinals, battling to three sets. After falling in the first set, 6-4, Jon Pine responded to claim the second set, 6-1, but Droll answered with a 6-1 win in the final set.
In the consolation singles, three Tech players advanced to the finals. Trpimir Kujundzic picked up two wins in the Stallings consolation bracket. He defeated Boston College’s Jonathan Raude, 6-3, 6-3 before claiming a 6-3, 6-4 decision over UAB’s Daniel Moser. Kujundzic will face Samford’s Fernando Costa in the finals.
Zachary Pine notched a pair of victories for the Hokies in the Stabler consolation draw. Zach Pine opened the day with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Davidson’s Connor Evins. In the second match, Zach Pine defeated Tulane’s Adam Bernstein, 6-4, 6-0. Zach Pine will square off against Alabama’s Rens van der Vis on Sunday in the consolation finals.
Tech’s Kevin Castellow knocked off two opponents on Saturday with a pair of wins in the Ingram consolation draw. Castellow defeated Ted Bolton of Davidson, 6-3, 6-1 and followed that up with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Sam Parfitt from Chattanooga. The Hokie player will face Southern Miss’ Alex Doleac in the consolation finals.
In the Namath consolation draw, Mauricio Antun defeated Inaki Belloso (USM) 6-1, 6-3. Antun fell to Samford’s Zac Dunkle in the day’s second match, 7-6(4), 6-4.
Antun paired up with Kujundzic for a doubles win on Saturday in the Crimson Draw. The Tech duo defeated Wake Forest’s pair Danny Kreyman and Adam Lee, 8-3. In the second doubles match, the Tech tandem fell to Alabama’s Jarryd Botha and van der Vis, 8-1. Botha is ranked No. 20 in doubles with teammate Ricky Doverspike.
The Crimson Tide Fall Championships will conclude on Sunday with the final round of singles and the semifinals and finals of doubles.
