TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – After a rain delay Virginia Tech men’s tennis tallied wins in singles and doubles during the opening day of action at the Crimson Tide Fall Championships in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
Due to weather, only the first round of singles and doubles were played during the opening day.
In the singles Bryant Draw, Tech’s Lucas Oliveira secured a win in straight sets, defeating UAB’s Chris Helliar, 6-4, 6-2. Oliveira will face No. 50 Idan Mark of Tulane in the second round.
The Hokies’ Hunter Koontz grabbed a win over Middle Tennessee State’s Cameron Dickerson with scores of 6-4, 6-0. Koontz will play Alex Bernard of USA in the second round.
Marko Lovrinovic also notched a win for the Hokies with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Alabama’s Rens van der Vis in the Stabler Draw. He will play Boston College’s Matt Wagner in the next round.
In the Ingram Draw, Jonathan Pine downed Southern Miss’ Alex Doleac, 6-2, 6-0. Pine is slated to face Davidson’s Roger Irigoyen of Davidson on Saturday.
Virginia Tech also secured a win in doubles as Antun and Kujundzic paired up in the Crimson Draw to defeat Derek Carpenter and Zane Smith of Ball State 8-5. They join Koontz and Oliveira, who received an opening round bye, in the second round of the Crimson Draw.
Matches will resume on Saturday at 9 a.m. CT with the second round of doubles. Two rounds of singles and the third round of doubles are slated to follow.
