CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia Tech men’s tennis team wrapped up the second day of the ITA Atlantic Regionals on Saturday as several players advanced in singles and doubles in Charlottesville, Va.
Tech’s No. 25 ranked Luka Somen opened play on Saturday after having a bye in the first round, he defeated Old Dominion’s Alfredo Rodriguez 6-0, 6-1 in his first match of the day. In the second match, Somen dropped Liberty’s Slim Tuus, 6-3, 6-3. Somen will face VCU’s Max Wennakoski in the round of 16 on Sunday.
The No. 27 ranked Tech duo of Somen and Corrado Degl’ Incerti Tocci paired up after having a bye in Friday’s opening round. The pair defeated ODU’s Carlos Lopez-Villa and Fahoum Fahoum, 8-6. They advance to face Ryan Pool and Florent Sentenac of James Madison.
Lucas Oliveira and Hunter Koontz also teamed up for a Tech doubles win. The pair defeated Chris Muzalewski and Albert Ochagavia of ODU, 8-3. The Hokie duo advances to play UVA’s Drew Courtney and Julen Uriguen. Both Cavalier players are ranked with other teammates in doubles, Courtney is No. 12 with Steven Rooda while Uriguen is No. 52 with Jarmere Jenkins.
Koontz also picked up a big singles win with an upset of UVA’s No. 21 Courtney in a hard fought three set match. After falling behind in the opening set 6-2, Koontz rallied back for a 6-4 win in the second set. The third set went back and forth, but Koontz held on for a 7-6(5) win. In the second match of the day, Koontz faltered, falling to ODU’s Muzalewski, 6-2, 6-4.
Marko Lovrinovic defeated Navy’s Marcus Rebersak, 6-2, 6-1, but fell in the next round to No. 65 Julen Uriguen of UVA, 6-0, 6-1. Mauricio Antun defeated Greg Vladimirsky of JMU in a three set match with scores of 1-6, 7-6(2), 6-2. In the round of 32, Antun fell to No. 112 Nick Sayer of Radford, 7-6(4), 6-3.
Tech’s Oliveira defeated Penn State’s Tomas Hanzlik, 6-3, 6-4 on Saturday, but dropped his second match of the day to GWU’s Francisco Dias, 6-3, 6-3. Dias is the No. 10 newcomer in the nation in the preseason ITA rankings.
Play will resume on Sunday at 10:30 a.m.
