CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia Tech men’s tennis team had a successful opening day of the ITA Atlantic Regionals on Friday in Charlottesville, Va. as the Hokies recorded eight wins.
In singles, Tech’s Trpimir Kujundzic defeated Delaware’s Adam Lawton in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2. The Hokies’ Marko Lovrinovic downed UMBC’s Kamal Patel, 6-2, 6-2 while Zachary Pine claimed a 7-5, 6-2 decision over George Washington’s Viktor Svensson.
Mauricio Antun had a three set battle with Liberty’s Shea Thomas. The Tech player claimed the opening set, 6-3, but dropped the second set, 6-2. He rallied back in the third set for a 6-2 win. Hunter Koontz defeated Robert Pietrucha of William & Mary 6-3, 7-5.
Kujundzic advances to the second round to face Penn State’s Bryan Welnetz while Lovrinovic will play Marcus Rebersak of Navy. Pine is set for a match-up against W&M’s Ben Guthrie and Antun is set to face James Madison’s Greg Vladimirsky. Koontz will face UVA’s No. 21 Drew Courtney.
Three other Hokies will begin singles competition on Saturday after receiving byes in the opening round. Lucas Oliveira will square off against Penn State’s Tomas Hanzlik. Tech’s No. 25 Luka Somen is set for Old Dominion’s Alfredo Rodriguez and Corrado Degl’ Incerti Tocci will match-up with JMU’s Hugo Ramadier.
The Hokies also began doubles competition on Friday, winning all three matches. Pine and Kujundzic teamed up for an 8-4 win over Ethan Dunbar and Aaron Wicker of Richmond.
Lovrinovic and Antun paired up to defeat Penn State’s duo of Jason Lee and Tomas Hanzlik in a close 8-7(6) match while Lucas Oliveira and Koontz picked up an 8-5 win against Liberty’s Slim Tuus and Tristan Stayt.
Pine and Kujundzic advance to face UVA’s Santiago Villegas and Justin Shane. Lovrinovic and Antun play Andrew Bruhn and Charlie Carls of Georgetown. Oliveira and Koontz will square off against ODU’s Chris Muzalewski and Albert Ochagavia.
Tech’s No. 27 duo of Somen and Tocci had a bye in the first round, but will face ODU’s duo Carlos Lopez-Villa and Fahoum Fahoum.
The tournament continues on Saturday with two rounds of singles and one round of doubles. Play begins at 9 a.m.
