CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia Tech men’s tennis team picked up three singles wins during the second day of the UVa Fall Classic on Saturday in Charlottesville Va.
Tech’s Trpimir Kujundzic defeated Maryland’s David Nguyen in the opening round of the black draw singles in a tough three set match. Kujundzic claimed the opening set, 7-6, but Nguyen came back for a 6-1 win in the second set. In the third set the Hokie player held off Nguyen to claim the match with a 7-5 win.
In the second round, Kujundzic fell to No. 90 Stijn Meulemans of Radford, 6-3, 7-5. Kujundzic will face UVa’s Dino Dell’Orto in the fifth place bracket on Sunday.
The Hokies’ Zachary Pine fell in the opening round of the orange draw with a 6-2, 6-3 loss to Penn State’s Brian Welnetz. Moving into the consolation bracket, Pine claimed a win in his second round match with a 6-2, 6-0 decision over Norfolk State’s Christian Romanzini.
With the win Pine moved into the consolation semifinals on Sunday and will face William & Mary’s Ilja Orre.
In the white draw, Virginia Tech’s Marko Lovrinovic dropped a first round match to Rogerio Ribeiro of East Tennessee State, 6-3, 6-1. The Hokies’ player moved into the consolation bracket, claiming a win in the second round with a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Radford’s Alex Metzner.
Lovrinovic advances to the consolation semifinals against Jaime Whiteford of William & Mary.
Sunday’s matches begin at 9 a.m.
