ATHENS, Ga. – The Virginia Tech men’s tennis team finished the second day of competition at the 44th Southern Intercollegiate Championship hosted by University of Georgia in Athens, Ga.
Tech’s Mauricio Antun claimed a win in the Division I singles consolation bracket, defeating Tennessee Tech’s Alex Chen in a three set match, 6-2, 5-7, 1-0 (10-6).
In the Division II singles, Hunter Koontz claimed a win over Vanderbilt’s Joe Dorn, 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 in his first match of the day. In Koontz’s second match he battled with Auburn’s Liam Gomez to three sets, claiming the first set, 6-4. Gomez came back in the second with a score of 7-6(5) and took the third set 1-0(10-6).
Tech’s Trpimir Kujundzic picked up a win in the Division II singles consolation, defeating UGA’s Will Reynolds, 7-5, 6-4. Zachary Pine also claimed a win for the Hokies in the consolation bracket with a 6-4, 1-6, 1-0(10-5) decision over Samford’s Fernando Costa.
Antun also paired up with N.C. State’s Will Rollinson for a pair of wins in the Division II doubles, advancing to the semifinals. The pair dropped Georgia State’s duo of Vincent Verpeaux and Ismael Lahlou, 8-6. Antun and Rollinson turned around in the next match to claim an 8-6 decision over Fernando Costa and Alex Sajonz of Samford.
The Southern Intercollegiate Championships continue on Sunday beginning at 8 a.m.
