ATHENS, Ga. – The Virginia Tech men’s tennis team had several players secure wins on the opening day of the 44th Southern Intercollegiate Championships hosted by University of Georgia in Athens, Ga.
Lucas Oliveira secured a big win for the Hokies in the opening round of singles, defeating No. 95 Anthony Rossi of Kentucky in straight sets. Oliveira rolled in the opening set, 6-2, but had a battle in the second set before coming away with the 7-6(6) decision to secure the match in the Division I singles.
In the Division II singles, Jonathan Pine defeated Rafael Rondino in three sets. Pine fell behind in the match, losing the opening set, 7-5. He came back in the next two sets to defeat Rondino, 6-4, 6-2.
Hunter Koontz also picked up a singles win for the Hokies in the Division II singles. Koontz defeated Winthrop’s Yuta Hirokawa, 6-3, 6-0.
The two Tech players move on to the second round in the flight where Pine will square off against Kentucky’s Alejandro Gomez while Koontz faces Vanderbilt’s Joe Dorn.
Pine also teamed up with his brother, Zachary Pine for a win in doubles. The duo paired up in the Division II draw for an 8-2 decision over a team made up of Lipscomb’s Daniel Hernandez and Georgia Tech’s Collin Edwards.
Tech’s Mauricio Antun paired up with N.C. State’s Will Rollison for a doubles win in the Division II draw. The pair defeated Georgia’s tandem of Will Oliver and Will Reynolds with a score of 9-7.
Competition will resume on Saturday at 7:45 a.m.
