Men's tennis to compete at two weekend events

BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech men’s tennis team will split time over the weekend with three members traveling to Charlottesville, Va. for the UVA Ranked +1 tournament while seven others head to Athens, Ga. for the 44th Southern Intercollegiate Championships.

Traveling to UVA are No. 25 Luka Somen, Corrado Degl’ Incerti Tocci and Patrick Daciek.

The field features 48 players from 13 schools, including 14 nationally ranked players and four who are in the top-25. Of the 13 participating schools, 11 were ranked in the final ITA poll last season. Joining UVA and Tech at the tournament are North Carolina, Maryland, Illinois, N.C. State, VCU, Wake Forest, Louisville, Radford, East Tennessee State, George Washington and Binghamton.

Friday’s schedule will begin with two rounds of doubles, followed by one round of singles. Play is slated to start at 10 a.m. on Friday. On Saturday the matches will start at 9 a.m. with the final rounds of doubles, followed by two singles rounds. Singles finals will be played on Sunday.

Making the trip to the Southern Intercollegiate Championships are Mauricio Antun, Marko Lovrinovic, Lucas Oliveira, Trpimir Kujundzic, Zachary Pine, Jonathan Pine and Hunter Koontz.

Over 160 players from 26 schools are competing over the weekend in Athens, Ga. Featured in the field are 16 athletes who are currently ranked in the preseason ITA singles standings. Twelve of the teams finished last season ranked in the final ITA poll. Joining the Hokies at the event are host team Georgia, Auburn, The Citadel, Davidson, Eastern Kentucky, East Tennessee State, Florida, Georgia Southern, Georgia State, Georgia Tech, Kentucky, Liberty, Lipscomb, LSU, Mercer, Minnesota, Mississippi State, N.C. State, Samford, South Carolina, Stetson, Tennessee, Tennessee Tech, Vanderbilt and Winthrop.

Friday’s schedule kicks off with singles at 7:45 a.m. Two rounds of doubles will be played on the opening day, starting at 4 p.m. The full four-day schedule can be found by clicking here.
