DURHAM N.C. – Virginia Tech’s No. 25 Luka Somen picked up a pair of wins on Saturday to advance to the flight finals at the Duke Nike Fab Four in Durham, N.C.
Inclement weather played a role during the second day of competition, delaying matches and forcing the event indoors. No doubles matches played on Saturday and will be resumed on Sunday along with the remaining singles matches.
Somen secured a 7-6, 7-5 win over Louisville’s Sebastian Stiefelmeyer in the quarterfinal match. In the semifinals, Somen claimed a win over N.C. State’s Austin Powell with scores of 6-4, 6-2.
Somen will square off against Duke’s No. 93 Fred Saba on Sunday in the white flight finals.
In the blue flight, Lucas Oliveira fell in the first match of the day in a hard-fought three set battle with No. 112 Nick Sayer of Radford. Tocci took the first set, 7-6, but Sayer came back to take the next two with scores of 7-1, 10-8.
Corrado Degl' Incerti Tocci faced Sean Webber of N.C. State in the second match of the day, going to another three sets before claiming the win. Thomson grabbed the first set, 6-4, but Tocci won the second set 6-4. The two battled in the final set, but Tocci claimed it with a 10-6 decision.
The Duke Nike Fab Four will conclude on Sunday.
