BLACKSBURG, Va. – Members of the Virginia Tech men’s tennis team are set to travel to Cary, N.C. to compete in the Duke Nike Fab Four, Sept. 16-18. Featured in the field are eight teams that finished the 2011 season ranked including 11 singles players and two doubles team that are currently ranked in the preseason ITA standings.
In addition to Tech and host team Duke, others competing are N.C. State, North Carolina, Kentucky, Louisville, Alabama, Radford, South Carolina, Elon and William & Mary. Friday’s schedule will begin at 9 a.m. with doubles. Singles play will start in the afternoon and is scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m.
Competing for the Hokies are No. 25 Luka Somen, Corrado Degl’ Incerti Tocci, Lucas Oliveira and Hunter Koontz. Somen and Tocci will be paired up in doubles and are currently ranked No. 27 in the preseason ITA standings.
Somen is coming of a trip to the 2011 NCAA Singles Championship after receiving an at-large bid and is ranked No. 25 in the preseason standings. He posted 22 singles victories last year and was ranked No. 6 in the Atlantic Region.
Tech’s Tocci secured 14 singles matches last season and added 13 doubles’ wins to his resume. He ranked as high as No. 15 in the Atlantic Region in singles last year.
Oliveira notched 20 wins in singles and 14 wins in doubles last season. Freshman Hunter Koontz is a five-star recruit out of Richmond, Va. and was ranked No. 55 last year by TennisRecruiting.net. The two Tech players will team up in doubles.
Friday’s competition will begin with the first two rounds of doubles while one round of singles will be played. On Saturday there will be a third (and final) round of doubles and two round of singles. The singles championship will be played on Sunday morning.
