BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech men’s tennis team is set to open up the 2011-12 campaign, Sept. 9-11 at the UNCG Fall Invite at the UNCG Tennis Courts in Greensboro, N.C.
Competing for the Hokies over the weekend are Trpimir Kujundzic (Jr., Zagreb, Croatia), Mauricio Antun (Fr., Sao Paulo, Brazil), Zachary Pine (Sr. Vienna, VA) and Kevin Castellow (So., Burke, Va.).
Kujundzic is the No. 1 overall seed in the tournament, competing in the A1 singles flight. He has a bye in the first round and will play the winner of UNCA’s Adrien Langeard and Gardner-Webb’s Korman Ates.
Antun is also competing in the A1 singles as the No. 3 seed. He will face North Carolina Central’s Jack Waissen in the opening round.
In the A2 singles, Pine claimed the No. 1 seed, earning a bye in the first round, but will face the winner of the opening match between Giancarlo Lemmi of Liberty and Nobuyoshi Tanaka from Longwood.
Rounding out singles play for the Hokies is Castellow with the No. 1 seed in the A3 flight. With a bye in the opening round, Castellow will face the winner of Liberty’s Dillon Segur and GWU’s Brenden Dempsey.
In the A Doubles, Kujundzic and Antun will team-up as the No. 1 seed with a bye in the opening round. Castellow and Pine will also pair up in the A doubles, facing Adrien Langeard and Tom Rees of UNCA in the opening round.
The tournament will get underway on Friday at 9 a.m. with singles play. Doubles will be played in the afternoon beginning at 3 p.m. The tournament format includes four flights of singles and two flights of doubles over the three-day span. In addition to VT and UNCG, UNC Asheville, Campbell, Gardner-Webb, Elon, Liberty, Longwood and North Carolina Central will compete.
