Several Hokies to participate in tournament

BLACKSBURG, Va. -- Several members of the Virginia Tech men’s and women’s tennis teams will participate this weekend in the ITA Summer Circuit tournament being played at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center on the Virginia Tech campus. The event will feature both singles and doubles draws with consolation brackets. Play will begin on Friday morning and conclude with the finals on Sunday.

Tech signee Hunter Koontz is seeded 5-8 in the event with Kevin Castellow also participating in the event. John Lewis (Texas A&M) is the top seed followed by Brandon Fickey (Tennessee), Jacob Lewis (Texas) and Taylor Patrick (Tennessee). Joining Koontz as a 5-8 alphabetical seed are Janik Burri (high school), Christian Lee-Daigle (Queens College) and Patrick O’Keefe (Radford). Alejandro Perez (high school) and Michael Retta (Vanderbilt) are both seeded ninth.

In the women’s tournament, Tech’s Tea Ivanovic is the top seed followed by teammate Isel Martinez-Marcos. Tech signee Carol Kahoun is the No. 3 seed followed by Melis Tanik (West Virginia) and Olivia Lewis (Samford).

Nearly 30,000 men and women have competed in ITA Summer Circuit events since it began in 1993. The circuit provides college (and junior and alumni) players the opportunity to compete in organized events virtually year round. Although the primary focus of the circuit is to provide incoming freshman and collegiate players the chance to compete in the summer months, for NCAA compliance purposes, the events within the ITA Summer Circuit are categorized as “open”; therefore anyone is eligible to compete in these events as long as he/she is a current ITA member.

The ITA Summer Circuit is currently made up of eight regional circuits (East, Mid-Atlantic, Southeast, Midwest, Central, Mountain, Texas and West) consisting of four consecutive open tournaments played during the month of July, leading up to the USTA/ITA National Summer Championships in Bloomington, Indiana in August.
