CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – One day after pulling out a tight 4-3 victory over NC State, the Virginia Tech men’s tennis was eliminated from the ACC Championships, 4-0, by No. 13 Duke. Due to the weather, the match was moved indoors to the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center at the University of North Carolina. The Blue Devils improved to 19-8, while the Hokies fell to 14-11. Tech must now wait for the announcement of bids to the NCAA Tournament on May 3. The first two rounds of the tournament will be held at 16 host sites May 13-15.
Duke won both of the completed doubles matches for the first point and took all three completed singles for the victory.
In singles, Luka Somen (Jr., Karlovac, Croatia), ranked No. 60 nationally, lost, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 1 against seventh-ranked Henrique Cunha and Patrick Daciek (Jr., Severna Park, Md.) fell, 6-0, 6-0, in the No. 2 contest versus No. 13 Reid Carleton. Duke completed the sweep as Lucas Oliveira (So., Sao Paulo, Brazil) dropped the No. 5 match, 6-2, 1-2 default, to Torsten Wietoska. The three remaining matches were halfted once the team outcome had been determined.
In doubles, Will Beck (Sr., Potomac, Md.)/Graber, ranked No. 61, lost, 8-6, at No. 1 to seventh-ranked Carleton/Cunha and Daciek/Corrado Degl’ Incerti Tocci (Jr., Reggio Emilia, Italy) fell, 8-5 at No. 3 versus Jared Pinsky/Fred Saba. The remaining match was stopped once the doubles point had been decided.
