GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Atlantic Coast Conference has announced the brackets for the 2011 ACC Men’s and Women’s Tennis Championships held at Cary Tennis Center in Cary, N.C., on April 21-24. Virginia Tech will be competing in its seventh ACC Tournament.
Tech’s men’s team, ranked No. 37 by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) is the sixth seed in the 12-team bracket. The Hokies are paired up to play NC State, the 11th seed in the bracket, on Thursday, April, 21 at 3 p.m.
The Hokies completed the regular season with a 13-10 overall and 5-6 ACC record. The Wolfpack have a 10-13 dual record and were 2-9 in conference matches.
Tech dropped a 5-2 decision in Raleigh, N.C., to NC State on April 10. In that contest, the Hokies were swept in the three matches and lost four of the six singles contests.
The winner of Thursday's match moves on to face the No. 3 seed in the championships, 10th-ranked Duke on Friday, April 22 at 3 p.m. The Blue Devils defeated Tech, 7-0, in Durham, N.C, on April 2.
On Saturday, April 23, there will be two semi-final matches. The first semi-final match is slated for 10 a.m., while the second semi-final match will be played at 1 p.m. The 11 a.m., title match will conclude the conference championships on Sunday, April 24.
The Hokies are the 11th seed in the women’s bracket and are set to open the conference championship on Thursday, April 21 at 3 p.m., against No. 6 seed Clemson, ranked No. 12 by the ITA.
Tech, ranked No. 52, is 10-14 overall and 2-9 in the ACC, while Clemson is 18-9 overall and 6-5 in conference action. The Hokies dropped a 7-0 decision to the Tigers in Sunday’s regular season finale in Clemson, S.C.
Next up for the winner of Thursday's match is a 3 p.m., contest versus the No. 3 seed, fifth-ranked Miami, on Friday, April 22 at 3 p.m.
The women’s semi-final matches will be played on Saturday, April 23 at 10 a.m., and 1 p.m. The championships conclude with the 11 a.m., title match on Sunday, April 24.
