Hokies upset bid fall short

BLACKSBURG, Va.. – Virginia Tech’s upset bid fell just short as the Hokies fell, 4-3, Friday evening to No. 13 Georgia Tech at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center. The Yellow Jackets improved to 17-3 on the year and 8-2 in the ACC, while the Hokies fell to 12-10 overall and 4-6 in the conference.

Georgia Tech swept a tight doubles competition for first point of day, then the teams split the six singles contests.

In singles, Patrick Daciek (Jr., Severna Park, Md.) defeated Kevin King, 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 (3), at No. 2, Will Beck (Sr., Potomac, Md.) cruised past Magin Ortiga, 6-3, 6-4, in the No. 4 contest and Corrado Degl’ Incerti Tocci (Jr., Reggio Emilia, Italy) pulled out the No. 6 match with a come-from-behind, 0-6, 6-4, 6-3, victory over Dusan Miljevic.

In other singles results, Luka Somen (Jr., Karlovac, Croatia), ranked No. 53, dropped the No. 1 match, 6-4, 7-6 (2), against No. 15 Guillermo Gomez, Pedro Graber (Sr., Santiago, Chile) lost, 6-2, 6-4, at No. 3 versus Eliot Potvin and Lucas Oliveira (So., Sao Paulo, Brazil) fell, 6-4, 6-3, at No. 5 to Dean O’Brien.

Georgia Tech won the doubles point as #43 Beck/Graber lost, 9-8 (5) at No. 1 to Potvin/Ryan Smith, Oliveira/Somen dropped a tight, 9-8 (3), decision at No. 2 against Gomez/O’Brien and Daciek/Trpimir Kujundzic (So., Zagreb, Croatia) fell, 8-5, at No. 3 to King/Miguel Muguruza.

The Hokies will return to action on Sunday with a 1 p.m., match against No. 62 Clemson. Seniors Will Beck, Pedro Graber and Sebastien Jacques will be honored prior to the match.
