RALEIGH, N.C. – The #38 Virginia Tech men’s tennis team played their final road match of the season this afternoon, dropping the final two singles matches at #67 NC State to fall to the Wolfpack 5-2. The win marks the first ACC victory of the year for the Wolfpack, who improve to 9-12 (1-8 ACC), while the Hokies fall to 12-9 (4-5 ACC).

The Wolfpack began the match with a sweep of the doubles competition to earn the first point of the day. David Chermak and Julian Sullivan opened with a 8-3 victory over Tech’s Patrick Daciek (Jr., Severna Park, Md.) and Trpimir Kujundzic (So., Zagreb, Croatia). Jaime Pulgar and Dave Thomson then clinched the doubles point with an 8-4 win over Luka Somen (Jr., Karlovac, Croatia) and Corrado Degl’Incerti Tocci (Jr., Reggio Emilia, Italy). Dominic Hodgson and Rob Lowe completed the sweep, defeating #66 Pedro Graber (r-Sr., Santiago, Chile) and Will Beck (Sr., Potomac, Md.) in a tie-breaker, 8-7(5).

Lucas Oliveira (So., Sao Paulo, Brazil) tied the match at one, defeating Julian Sullivan, 6-4, 6-3, in No. 5 singles. Pulgar put NC State back on top, defeating #50 Somen in No. 1 singles 6-1, 6-4. Beck then knotted the score at two, downing Rafael Paez at the No. 4 spot, 6-2, 7-6(1). Hodgson once again regained the Wolfpack lead with a win in the No. 2 singles match, defeating Daciek, 6-4, 6-2. Dave Thomson then earned the clinching point in No. 6 singles, defeating Kujundzic in a nailbiter, 7-6(5), 7-5. Ivan Sanchez Gomez won the final point of the day, downing Tech’s Pedro Graber in a come-back win, 5-7, 6-1, 6-4, for a final score of 5-2 NC State.

The Hokies return home next weekend to close out the regular season with a pair of ACC matches. They will host Georgia Tech at 3 p.m. on Friday, April 15, followed by Clemson at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
