No. 10 Duke defeats Tech, 6-1

BLACKSBURG, Va. – Virginia Tech dropped its second consecutive match to a top-20 ACC opponent Sunday afternoon with a 6-1 loss to No. 10 Duke at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center. The Hokies fall to 11-8 overall and 3-4 in the ACC, while the Blue Devils improved to 14-7 and 5-1 in the conference. Tech lost a tough, 4-3, match to No. 17 North Carolina on Friday.

Duke swept the three doubles matches for the first point of the day and took five of the six singles matches in the victory.

Will Beck (Sr., Potomac, Md.) picked up Tech’s only singles win with a, 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (4), victory at No. 4 over Fred Saba. In other singles results, Luka Somen (Jr., Karlovac, Croatia), ranked No. 50, dropped the No. 1 match, 6-4, 6-3, to sixth-ranked Henrique Cuna, Patrick Daciek (Jr., Severna Park, Md.) lost, 6-2, 6-4, at No. 2 against No. 8 Reid Carleton and Pedro Graber (r-Sr., Santiago, Chile) lost, 7-6 (4), 7-5, in the No. 3 contest versus Chris Mengel.

Elsewhere, Trpimir Kujundzic (So., Zagreb, Croatia) lost, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3, at No. 5 against Torsten Wietoska and Lucas Oliveira (So., Sao Paulo, Brazil) fell, 3-6, 6-4, 6-1, at No. 6 to Luke Marchese.

In doubles, Beck/Graber, ranked No. 66, lost, 8-4, to sixth-ranked Carleton/Cunha, Somen/Tocci dropped the No. 2 contest, 8-4, versus David Holland/Mengel and Daciek/Trpimir Kujundzic (So., Zabreb, Croatia) fell, 8-7 (4), in the No. 3 match to Cale Hammond/Wietoska.

The Hokies return to action next weekend with road contests at Wake Forest (Fri., 3:30 p.m.) and NC State (Sun., 1 p.m.).
