BLACKSBURG, Va. – Despite winning the doubles point to open the match, Virginia Tech’s upset bid fell just short in a 4-3 loss Friday afternoon to No. 17 North Carolina at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center. Tech fell to 11-7 overall and 3-3 in the ACC with the loss, while the Tar Heels won their seventh straight match to improve to 10-4 on the year and 5-0 in the conference.
After taking the doubles point, the Hokies opened up a 2-0 advantage as Will Beck (Sr., Potomac, Md.) defeated Joey Burkhardt, 6-3, 6-4, at No. 4. UNC got on the board as Patrick Daciek (Jr., Severna Park, Md.) lost his No. 2 match, 6-2, 6-2, against Brennan Boyajian, but Tech increased the lead to 3-1 with Lucas Oliveira (So., Sao Paulo, Brazil) picking up a 6-1, 7-5, win at No. 6 over Zach Hunter.
The Tar Heels began their come back as Corrado Degl’ Incerti Tocci (Jr., Reggio Emilia, Italy) lost, 6-4, 6-4, at No. 5 versus William Parker and UNC tied the match, 3-3, as Luka Somen (Jr., Karlovac, Croatia), ranked No. 50 nationally, fell, 6-3, 6-3, at No. 1 to 38th-ranked Jose Hernandez. With the dual match hanging the balance, Pedro Graber (r-Sr., Santiago, Chile) dropped his No. 3 contest, 6-3, 7-6 (5), to Stefan Hardy.
Tech opened the day by sweeping the doubles competition as Beck/Graber, ranked No. 66, upset 21st-ranked Boyajian/Hernandez, 8-5, at No. 1 and Somen/Tocci took the No. 2 contest by upsetting No. 59 Burkhardt/Hardy, 8-4. The Hokies completed the sweep as Daciek/Trpimir Kujundzic (So., Zagreb, Croatia) defeated Cameron Ahari/Hunter, 9-7.
The Hokies return to action on Sunday playing host to No. 10 Duke at 1 p.m.
