No. 29 Miami edges out No. 36 Tech, 6-1
No. 45 Luka Somen earns victory in third set

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The Hokies could not overcome an early deficit, as No. 29 Miami (10-5, 4-1) defeated No. 36 Virginia Tech (11-6, 3-2) 6-1.

Miami grabbed an early 5-0 lead, with the final two singles matches of the day being decided in third sets providing an exciting finish to the competition, including No. 45 Luka Somen earning a victory in the No. 1 singles match to prevent the shutout.

The Hurricanes earned the first point of the day, taking two of the three doubles matches. The Miami duo of Christian Blocker and Carl Sundberg upset No. 52 Somen and Corrado Degl’ Incerti Tocci, 8-4, in the No. 2 doubles match. The Hokies evened it up with the No. 1 doubles match, as No. 45 Pedro Graber and Will Beck took down Keith Crowley and Waylon Chin, 8-4. Miami took the rubber match, as Eduardo Pavia and Pedro Ast edged out Patrick Daciek and Trpimir Kujundzic, 8-6.

Miami extended its lead to 2-0 with the first singles match of the day, as Sundberg beat Tocci 6-3, 6-1. Pavia defeated Beck in the No. 5 match 6-3, 6-2 and Chin defeated Graber 6-2, 6-4 to extend the Hurricanes’ lead to 4-0. Miami’s Gabriel Flores took the No. 6 singles match over Lucas Oliveira, including an overtime victory in the first set, 7-6, 6-4.

The final two singles matches of the day went to third sets. No. 45 Somen defeated Blocker 7-6 in the first set with Blocker rebounding in the second to a 6-3 victory. In the third set, Somen dominated Blocker 10-1 for the Hokies’ first team point of the day.

Daciek and Crowley split the first two sets with identical overtime scores, as Dacieck took the first 7-6 and Crowley matched it with a 7-6 second. Crowley earned the victory in the third frame, defeating Dacieck 10-4.

The Hokies return home for their next pair of ACC contests, first facing North Carolina on Friday, April 1 at 2:30 p.m. and then taking on Duke on Sunday, April 3 at 1 p.m.
