TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The No. 36 Virginia Tech men’s tennis team battled back-and-forth play all afternoon, but eventually came out on top, claiming a 4-3 victory over No. 46 Florida State at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center. Pedro Graber would eventually be the deciding factor for the Hokies, earning the team its fourth and final point.

After dropping the extremely tight doubles competition, Patrick Daciek (Jr., Severna Park, Md.) brought home the first singles victory of the day for Tech (11-5, 3-1 ACC) in the No. 2 match as he defeated FSU’s Connor Smith 6-3, 6-3. Jordan Kelly-Houston put the Seminoles (6-9, 1-3 ACC) up 2-1 when he took the No. 4 contest from Corrado Degl' Incerti Tocci (Reggio Emilia, Italy), 7-5, 6-1.

Continuing the taffy pull, Will Beck (Sr., Potomac, Md.) evened the match for the Hokies when he claimed the No. 5 match over FSU’s Andres Bucaro, 7-6 (2), 6-3.

In arguably the biggest matchup of the afternoon, No. 26 Vahid Mirzadeh won the No. 1 match from Tech’s No. 45 Luka Somen (Jr., Karlovac, Croatia), 6-4, 6-4.

Lucas Oliveira (So., Sao Paulo, Brazil) knotted the match for the Hokies when he captured the No. 6 singles spot with a 6-2 victory in the first set and later taking the tiebreaker in the second, 7-6 (7).

With the match squared at 3-3, the outcome came down to a battle in the No. 3 match. Tech’s Pedro Graber (r-Sr., Santiago, Chile) went down to the wire with FSU’s Blake Davis as he fell in the first set, 6-7 (3), but bounced back to claim the next two, 6-4, 7-5, and clinch the victory for the Hokies.

The Seminoles took the doubles point as they swept all three matches. The first win came in the top spot as the No. 15 combination of Mirzadeh/Smith claimed an 8-6 victory over Tech’s No. 45 team of Beck/ Graber.

FSU’s Kelly-Houston/ Davis clinched the doubles point when they defeated Daciek/ Trpimir Kujundzic (So., Zagreb, Croatia), 9-8 (10), in the three spot. Rounding out the doubles play was Bucaro/ Reed, as they topped Tech’s No. 52 pairing of Tocci/ Somen in a long-winded, 9-8 (4) victory.
