Tech falls 5-2 at VCU

RICHMOND, Va. -- The Virginia Tech men’s tennis team saw a seven-match winning streak come to an end Sunday afternoon in a 5-2 loss at No. 56 Virginia Commonwealth. The Hokies fall to 10-5 on the year, while the Rams improved to 16-3 with their ninth straight victory.

Tech dropped two of the three doubles matches to lose the first point of the day, and dropped four of the six singles matches in the loss.

In singles action, the Hokies picked up victories at No. 1 as Luka Somen (Jr., Karlovac, Croatia), ranked No. 45 nationally, defeated Tim Johannsen, 6-7 (6), 7-6 (0), 1-0 (7), and Will Beck (Sr., Potomac, Md.) took the No. 5 contest, 7-6 (1), 6-2, over Camill Salomon.

Elsewhere, Patrick Daciek (Jr., Severna Park, Md.) lost, 6-4, 1-6, 6-3, at No. 2 versus Max Wennakoski, Pedro Graber (r-Sr., Santiago, Chile) dropped the No. 3 match, 6-7 (3), 7-6 (0), 6-4, to Antoine Baroz, Corrado Degl’ Incerti Tocci (Jr., Reggio Emilia, Italy) fell, 6-0, 6-3, at No. 4 against Jaime Vazquez Catoira and Trpimir Kujundzic (So., Zagreb, Croatia) dropped the No. 6 match, 6-4, 6-1, to Alejandro Argente.

In doubles, Beck/Graber, ranked No. 45 in the nation, defeated Salomon/Vazquez Catoira, 8-5 at No. 1. However, VCU took the point as No. 53 Somen/Tocci lost, 8-3, at No. 2 against Baroz/Johannsen and Daciek/Lucas Oliviera (So., Sao Paulo, Brazil) lost, 8-5, at No. 3 to Svensson/Wennakoski.

Tech returns to the ACC schedule next weekend with matches at No. 45 Florida State (March 25) and at No. 25 Miami (March 27).
