BLACKSBURG, Va. -- The Virginia Tech men’s tennis team, riding a seven-match winning streak, hits the road this weekend after an extended break to conclude the non-conference schedule on Sunday at No. 56 Virginia Commonwealth. The 1 p.m., match will be held at the Thalhimer Tennis Center on the VCU campus.
Virginia Tech (10-4), No. 30 in this week’s ITA national poll, extended its current winning streak to seven matches with a 4-3 win over No. 20 Louisville on March 4 at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center. Pedro Graber (r-Sr., Santiago, Chile) won the clinching, three-set match at the No. 3 position to give the Hokies the victory.
Luka Somen (Jr., Karlovac, Croatia), ranked No. 45 nationally in singles, leads Tech with a 11-2 dual match record at the No. 1 position. Tech has two doubles teams ranked nationally this week including Graber/Will Beck (Sr., Potomac, Md.) at No. 45 and Somen/Corrado Degl’ Incerti Tocci (Jr., Reggio Emilia, Italy) at No. 52.
VCU (15-3) won its eighth consecutive match on Thursday with a, 6-1, victory at South Carolina. Tech has won the last two meetings, taking a 5-2 win last year and winning 4-2 in 2008 with both matches played at home.
Following the VCU contest, Tech returns to the ACC schedule with matches at No. 45 Florida State (March 25) and at No. 25 Miami (March 27).
