BLACKSBURG, Va. -- The Virginia Tech men’s tennis team, riding a six-match winning streak, will face a stiff challenge on Friday when the Hokies take on No. 20 Louisville at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center.
Virginia Tech (9-4), No. 35 in this week’s ITA national poll, extended its current winning streak to six matches with victories last weekend at home over Boston College (7-0) and Brown (4-3). Tech is led by Luka Somen (Jr., Karlovac, Croatia), ranked No. 51 nationally, who has won eight-straight matches and is 11-1 in dual contest this year. Somen and Corrado Degl’ Incerti Tocci (Jr., Reggio Emilia, Italy) are ranked No. 76 nationally in this week’s poll.
Louisville (8-4) dropped a 6-1 decision at No. 3 Ohio State last Sunday. The Cardinals are led by 12th-ranked Austen Childs and No. 115 Viktor Maksimcuk. Childs and Maksimmuck are also ranked No. 16 nationally in doubles.
Louisville defeated Tech twice last year picking up a 5-2 win at Louisville during the regular season and a 4-1 home victory in the NCAA Second Round. In the last 10 meetings between the two programs, the Cardinals hold a 6-4 advantage with the home team winning every match.
Following this weekend’s action, Tech will take some time off for spring break before returning to the court on March 20 for a 1 p.m., contest at No. 58 Virginia Commonwealth.
