BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech men’s tennis team continued its homestand this afternoon hosting the #72 Nittany Lions of Penn State University in an outdoor dual match beginning today at noon. After Penn State won the first two points of the match, the #30 Hokies stormed back, winning the next four straight and taking the match by a score of 4-3. The Hokies, now on a four-match winning streak, improve to 7-4, while the Nittany Lions fall to 6-3.

Penn State began the competition by winning two out of the three doubles matches to earn the first point of the day. Taylor Cohen and Bryan Welnetz were the first to finish, defeating Trpimir Kujundzic (So., Zagreb, Croatia) and Lucas Oliveira (So., Sao Paulo, Brazil), 8-2, in the No. 3 spot. C.J. Griffin and Jason Lee then clinched the doubles point, defeating Luka Somen (Jr., Karlovac, Croatia) and Carrado Degl’ Incerti Tocci (Jr., Reggio Emilia, Italy), 8-2, at No. 2, before Virginia Tech’s Pedro Graber (r-Sr., Santiago, Chile) and Will Beck (Sr., Potomac, Md.) won the No. 1 doubles, defeating Russell Bader and Eddie Bourchier, 8-2.

Lee picked up a second point for the Nittany Lions, defeating Patrick Daciek (Jr., Severna Park, Md.), 6-3, 6-0, at No. 2 singles. Carrado Degl’ Incerti Tocci earned the first Hokie point of the afternoon, defeating Bader, 6-2, 7-6 (4), in the No. 4 match. #39 Luka Somen continued his dominant play, defeating Bourchier in the No. 1 singles match, 6-3, 6-3, and tying the overall match at two points apiece.

Francesc Avlina Fajula (Fr., Barcelona, Spain) gave the Hokies their first lead of the afternoon, defeating Chris Young, 6-4, 6-4, in the No. 6 match to give Tech a 3-2 advantage. Graber then earned the Hokies’ fourth straight point, defeating Welnetz, 6-4, 6-3, in the No. 3 spot and clinching the win for Tech. The Nittany Lions picked up the final point of the afternoon, as Christopher Hasyn bounced back after losing the first set to defeat Will Beck, 5-7, 7-6 (3), 6-3, in the No. 5 match.

Tech’s homestand continues next Saturday, Feb. 26, when the Hokies host Boston College in an ACC match beginning at 10:30 a.m.
