BLACKSBURG, Va. -- The Virginia Tech men’s tennis team faces a very busy weekend at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center. The Hokies will have a double-header on Fri., Feb. 18 against James Madison (1 p.m.) and St. Bonaventure (6 p.m.) followed by a Sun., Feb. 20 contest versus No. 72 Penn State (noon). The first 50 fans in attendance at the Penn State match will receive a free Virginia Tech Tote Bag.
Virginia Tech (4-4), ranked No. 30 in this week’s ITA national poll, split two ACC matches last weekend losing, 6-1, at No. 1 Virginia and winning, 5-2, at No. 63 Maryland. Luka Somen (Jr., Karlovac, Croatia), the reigning ACC Player of Week, earned a No. 39 national ranking this week after defeating No. 27 Michael Shabaz (Virginia) and No. 36 Maros Horny (Maryland).
James Madison (2-2) dropped a match last week, 5-2, at Old Dominion. The Hokies and Dukes last met on Feb. 1, 2006, with Tech winning 7-0.
St. Bonaventure (2-3) won two matches last week, picking up home wins over Colgate (6-1) and St. Francis (7-0). Tech defeated St. Bonaventure, 6-1, in Blacksburg on Feb. 13, 2009, in the last meeting between the two programs.
Penn State (6-2) defeated Buffalo, 5-2, in its only match last week. The Nittany Lions and Hokies did not play last year but faced each other each year from 2006-2009 with the Hokies winning three of the four matches.
Following this weekend’s action, Tech will return to the court Fri., Feb. 26 for a home contest versus Boston College (10:30 am.), which will be followed on Sat., Feb. 27 by a non-conference match against Brown (1 p.m.).
