GREENSBORO, N.C. – Virginia Tech junior Luka Somen has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Tennis Player of the Week after defeating two ranked opponents at No. 1 singles and playing a part in two conference doubles wins, including an upset of the nation’s 10th-ranked team.

Somen accounted for the Hokies lone point in last Friday’s match vs. top-ranked Virginia, defeating then 27th-ranked (and now 15th-) ranked Michael Shabaz by a 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 score on the No. 1 court. Somen and partner Corrodo Degl’ Incerti Tocci also teamed up for an 8-2 win over the 10th-ranked Virginia team of Alex Domijan and Jarmere Jenkins.

Somen, a native of Karlovac, Croatia, followed up with a 6-2, 1-6, 6-3 win over Maryland’s No. 36 Maros Horny. Somen was again the winning half of a doubles team vs. the Terps as he and Tocci combined for a 9-8 (3) victory over John Collins and Jan Surovic.

Somen, now 39th in the latest ITA singles rankings released on Tuesday, has won his last four matches at No. 1 singles and is 7-1 in dual matches thus far in the spring season.

The Hokies, ranked No. 30 in this week's Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll, will return to action this Friday playing host to James Madison (1 p.m.) and St. Bonaventure (6 p.m.) and will also play No. 72 Penn State on Sunday at noon.
