COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Luka Somen continued his outstanding play on Sunday afternoon by upsetting a nationally-ranked player for the second consecutive match and clinched the Hokies, 5-2, victory over No. 63 Maryland at the Tennis Center at College Park. Tech improved to 4-4 overall and 1-1 in the ACC, while Maryland fell to 4-2 overall and 0-2 in league play.
Somen (Jr., Karlovac, Croatia), who defeated Virginia’s No. 27 Michael Shabaz on Friday, upset 36th-ranked Maros Horny, 6-2, 1-6, 6-3, in the No. 1 singles match for the clinching point. The Hokies, ranked No. 29, swept the three doubles matches for the first point of the day, before taking four of the six singles matches in the victory.
After Tech won the doubles, Maryland leveled the match as Corrado Degl’ Incerti Tocci (Jr., Reggio Emilia, Italy) lost his No. 4 match to 117th-ranked Sergio Wyss, 6-3, 7-5. Will Beck (Sr., Potomac, Md.) gave the Hokies a 2-1 lead by defeating Jesse Kiuru, 6-4, 6-3, at No. 5, and Pedro Graber (r-Sr., Santiago, Chile) made the score 3-1 with a win at No. 3, 6-4, 7-6 (3), over John Collins.
Francesc Aulina Fajula (Fr., Barcelona, Spain), lost a tough, 6-4, 1-6, 6-3, at No. 6 against Tommy Laine to narrow the advantage to 3-2 before Somen’s clinching win. In the final singles event, Patrick Daciek (Jr., Severna Park, Md.) won his No. 2 match, 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 (2) against Andy Magee.
In doubles action, Daciek/Sebastien Jacques (Sr., Magog, Quebec, Canada) defeated Kiuru/Laine, 8-3, at No. 3 and Beck/Graber clinched the opening point with their 8-3 win over Horny/Magee in the No. 1 match. Tech completed the doubles sweep with Somen/Tocci defeating Collins/Jan Surovic, 9-8 (3), at No. 2.
The Hokies return home next weekend on Fri., Feb. 18 for contests against James Madison (1 p.m.) and St. Bonaventure (6 p.m.), and will also play host to Penn State at noon on Sun., Feb. 20 at noon.
