BLACKSBURG, Va. -- The Virginia Tech men’s tennis team will open the ACC portion of the schedule this weekend with matches at No. 1 Virginia and at No. 63 Maryland. The Virginia contest will be played Fri., Feb. 11 at 6 p.m., at the Boyd Tinsley Courts at the Boar’s Head Sports Club. The Maryland match is scheduled for Sun., Feb. 13, at noon, and will be played at the Tennis Center at College Park.
Virginia Tech (3-3), ranked No. 29 in this week’s ITA national poll, split two very tight matches last weekend in Minneapolis, Minn. The Hokies fell to the host No. 30 Golden Gophers, 4-3, on Friday, before bouncing back with a, 4-3, win over No. 35 Boise State. Luka Somen (Jr., Karlovac, Croatia) had a solid weekend winning both of his singles matches at No. 1 as well as taking both No. 2 doubles contests.
Virginia (8-0, 1-0) defeated then-No. 71 Maryland and No. 12 Kentucky by 7-0 scores last week at home. The Cavaliers defeated the Hokies, 6-1, last year in Blacksburg, sweeping the six singles matches after Tech won the doubles competition.
In addition to the Virginia loss, Maryland (4-1, 0-1) bounced back to defeat No. 57 Cornell, 5-2, at home. The Hokies defeated the Terps, 7-0, last year in Blacksburg.
Following this weekend’s action, Tech will return to action Feb. 18, playing host to James Madison (1 p.m.) and St. Bonaventure (6 p.m.), then will also have a home contest on Feb. 20 versus Penn State (noon).
