TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Jonathan Pine concluded his best collegiate tournament Sunday morning winning his flight final at the Crimson Tide Invitational. Lucas Oliveira lost his singles flight final and also dropped a doubles semifinal with partner Luka Somen. The tournament included players from 25 schools and was hosted by the University of Alabama.
Pine (Jr., Vienna, Va.) defeated Matt Dooley (Notre Dame), 7-5, 6-1, in the Steadman Shealy Flight final, while Oliveira (So., Sao Paulo, Brazil) dropped the Gene Stallings Flight final, 7-5, 6-7, 6-2, to Tyler Davis (Notre Dame). Also in singles action, Leonardo Lapentti (So., Guayaquil, Ecuador) lost, 6-4, 6-4, versus Trey Walston (Alabama) in the Shealy Consolation Flight final.
In doubles, Oliveira/Luka Somen (Jr., Karlovac, Croatia) dropped the Crimson Flight semifinal to Tom Puetz/David Zimmerman (UAB), 8-2.
The Hokies will open the dual match season on Jan. 22, 2011 hosting Eastern Kentucky (11 a.m.) and Longwood (5 p.m.).
