CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The four remaining players for Virginia Tech were eliminated Friday afternoon at the USTA/ITA Atlantic Regional tournament. The event, hosted by the University of Virginia, features some of the top players in the nation and continues through Sun., Oct. 24, at the Snyder Tennis Center.
Corrado Degl Incerti Tocci (Jr., Reggio Emilia, Italy), seeded No. 7 and ranked No. 109 in the nation, won his Round of 16 match, 6-2, 7-5, versus No. 16 seed and 114th-ranked Steven Rooda (Virginia), before dropping the quarterfinal, 6-3, 6-4, to No. 13 seed Julen Uriguen (Virginia).
In other Friday singles action, Will Beck (Sr., Potomac, Md.) lost, 6-4, 6-2, to No. 1 seed and sixth-ranked Michael Shabaz (Virginia), Pedro Graber (r-Sr., Santiago, Chile), a 17-32 seed, dropped a, 7-5, 6-4, decision against No. 5 seed Maros Horney (Maryland) and Luka Somen (Jr., Karlovac, Croatia), the No. 3 seed and ranked No. 52 nationally, was upset by 17-32 seed Sergio Wyss (Maryland), 6-2, 6-2.
In Friday doubles, Daciek/Graber, seeded 9-12, lost, 8-6, to No. 5 seed Bouchier/Lee (Penn State).
The USTA/ITA Atlantic Regional was the final event of the fall individual season. The Hokies will open the dual match season on Jan. 22 hosting Eastern Kentucky and Longwood.
