Four Hokies move into Atlantic Regional Round of 16
Beck, Graber, Somen, Tocci advance

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Four Virginia Tech players won two matches on Thursday to advance into the Round of 16 at the USTA/ITA Atlantic Regional tournament. The event, hosted by the University of Virginia, features some of the top players in the nation and continues through Sun., Oct. 24, at the Snyder Tennis Center.

In Thursday’s singles action, Will Beck (Sr., Potomac, Md.) recorded a come-from-behind, 2-6, 6-4, 6-2, win over No. 11 seed Adam Duprat (UMBC), then cruised past Nobu Tanaka (Longwood), 6-3, 6-2. Beck will have a tough task on Friday as he will face the tournament’s No. 1 seed and sixth-ranked Michael Shabaz (Virginia) in a 10 a.m. match.

Pedro Graber (r-Sr., Santiago, Chile), a 17-32 seed, defeated Santiago Villegas (Virginia), 6-2, 6-2, in his first match, before eliminating No. 9 seed Tobias Fanselow (Old Dominion), 6-3, 3-6, 6-2. Graber will play No. 5 seed Maros Horney (Maryland) at 10 a.m.

Luka Somen (Jr., Karlovac, Croatia), the No. 3 seed and ranked No. 52 nationally, easily won his two matches defeating Brian Fang (Virginia), 6-2, 6-1, and Jason Lee (Penn State), 6-3, 6-3. Somen will face 17-32 seed Sergio Wyss (Maryland) in a 10 a.m., Round of 16 match.

Corrado Degl Incerti Tocci (Jr., Reggio Emilia, Italy), seeded No. 7 and ranked No. 109 in the nation, won a tight, 2-6, 6-1, 7-5, match versus Krzysztof Muzalewski (Old Dominon), before picking up a, 6-4, 6-3, victory against 17-32 seed Weinetz (Penn State). Tocci will play at 10 a.m., against No. 16 seed and 114th-ranked Steven Rooda (Virginia).

In other single results, Leonardo Lapentti (So., Guayaquil, Ecuador) won a tough, 7-6 (5), 2-6, 7-5, match over No. 12 seed Sebastian Vidal (William & Mary), but was eliminated, 6-2, 6-1, by Christopher Kushman (George Washington). Jonathan Pine (Jr., Vienna, Va.) lost, 6-3, 6-1, to No. 4 seed and 57th-ranked, Ivan Salec (Radford) and Zach Pine (Jr., Vienna, Va.) was eliminated, 6-4, 6-3, by No. 8 seed Justin Shane (Virginia).

Elsewhere, Trpimir Kujundzic (So., Zagreb, Croatia) upset 17-32 seed Jesse Kiuru (Maryland), 6-3, 6-2, before being eliminated by No. 13 seed Julen Uriguen (Virginia), 3-6, 6-1, 6-2. Patrick Daciek (Jr., Severna Park, Md.), seeded No. 14, beat Fhoum Fahoum (Old Dominion), 6-3, 6-2, but was upset by 17-32 seed Tim Johannsen (VCU), 6-3, 7-6 (1).

In consolation singles, Lucas Oliveira (So., Sao Paulo, Brazil) defeated Daniel Mihalov (W&M), 6-2, 6-2, and Adam Lawton (Fr., Las Vegas, Nev.) lost, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2, against Arsenio Culver (Norfolk State).

In Thursday doubles, Daciek/Graber, seeded 9-12, picked up Tech’s lone win, 8-6, over Laffey/List (Lehigh). Kujundzic/Oliveira were eliminated, 8-2, by No. 8 seed Collins/Horny (Maryland), while Beck/Z. Pine lost, 8-2, versus No. 3 seed Rooda/Singh (Virginia) and No. 7 seed Somen/Tocci were upset, 8-5, by Moulin/Sentenac (James Madison).
