TULSA, Okla. - Virginia Tech’s struggles continued on Monday with two losses in the qualifying round of the 2010 D’Novo/ITA Men’s Tennis All-American Championships. The University of Tulsa is hosting the tournament for the fourth-straight year and for the sixth year overall at the Case Tennis Center on the TU campus.
Luka Somen (Jr., Karlovac, Croatia), ranked No. 52 nationally, dropped his qualifying round match Monday afternoon, 7-6 (5), 6-4, against Matt Allare (Ohio State). Corrado Degl’ Incerti Tocci (Jr., Reggio Emilia, Italy), ranked No. 109 nationally, lost a three-set contest, 4-6, 6-0, 6-1, to Krisztian Krocsko (Purdue).
Tech’s Will Beck (Sr., Potomac., Md.) and Patrick Daciek (Jr., Severna Park, Md.) dropped their contests on Saturday in the pre-qualifying rounds. Beck lost, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5, to Bryan Griffin (SMU) in a morning match. Daciek received a first round bye and then dropped a, 6-2, 6-3, decision to Vitor Manzini (Texas Tech).
The Hokies will get a chance at redemption in Tuesday afternoon’s qualifying double competition. Beck/Daciek will play Adrian Forberg-Skogeng/Kalle Nordberg (Mississippi), while Tocci/Somen battle Austen Childs/Viktor Maksimcuk (Louisville).
The nation’s top male collegiate tennis players are slated to compete in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s (ITA) first national event of the 2010-11 season. The tournament will include six rounds of pre qualifying and qualifying matches beginning October 2 for both singles and doubles.
