CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Luka Somen put up a tough battle Saturday afternoon before his upset bid came up short in the Flight A-2 semifinal of the UVa Ranked Plus One Invitational. The Friday-Sunday event is being played at the Snyder Tennis Center. The elite field has a total of 28 ranked players including 11 who competed in the 2010 NCAA Singles Championship.
Somen (Jr., Karlovac, Croatia), ranked No. 52 nationally in singles, won his Flight A-2 quarterfinal, 6-3, 6-2, against Andre Stenger (Nebraska), but dropped the semifinal, 6-1, 6-7 (5), 6-3, to 33rd-ranked Ionut Beleleu (Oklahoma). Somen will see action Sunday morning in the third place match.
Patrick Daciek (Jr., Severna Park, Md.) won his first Flight A-3 consolation quarterfinal, 6-3, 6-2, over Jan Jaklitsch (Cornell), then lost in the semis, 6-3, 6-2, to Matt Hogan (Arkansas). Daciek will play his final match Sunday morning.
In doubles, Daciek/Somen lost the Flight A-2 third place match, 8-5, against Pulger/Sanchez (NC State).
