CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Two members of the Virginia Tech men’s tennis team had opposite results on the first day the UVa Ranked Plus One Invitational. The Friday-Sunday event is being played at the Snyder Tennis Center. The elite field has a total of 28 ranked players including 11 who competed in the 2010 NCAA Singles Championship.
Luka Somen (Jr., Karlovac, Croatia), ranked No. 52 nationally in singles, cruised in his opening Flight A-2 match with a, 6-2, 6-4, win over Thomas Oehean (Radford). Somen will face Andre Stenger (Nebraska) at 12:30 p.m., in the quarters with the winner advancing to the 4:30 p.m. semifinal. Patrick Daciek (Jr., Severna Park, Md.) dropped his opening Flight A-3 contest, 6-2, 6-0, against 21st-ranked Rhyne Williams (Tennessee). Daciek will face Ian Atkinson (Wake Forest) in a 10 a.m., consolation match.
In doubles, the Tech duo in Flight A-2 upset the 41st-ranked pair of Horny/Laine (Maryland), 8-5, then dropped a tough, 9-8 (4), decision versus Oudshoorn/Shane (Virginia). Daciek/Somen will play Pulger/Sanchez (NC State) in the third place match Saturday at 8:30 a.m.
Action begins each day at 9 a.m. at the Snyder Tennis Center and admission is free.
