DURHAM, N.C. – Virginia Tech had a rough Saturday on the second day of the Fab Four Invite hosted by Duke University at the Cary Tennis Park in Cary, N.C. The event includes 11 schools being represented in the men’s draw.
The host Blue Devils are joined by players from East Tennessee State, Indiana, Louisville, North Carolina, North Carolina Central, North Carolina State, Radford, South Carolina, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest.
In singles, Lucas Oliveira (So., Sao Paulo, Brazil) won by default in the Section A consolation versus David Holland (Duke) before losing, 6-1, 6-4, to Viktor Maksimcuk (Louisville). Will Beck (Sr., Potomac, Md.) dropped his Section B singles quarterfinal match, 6-4, 6-4, against 36th-ranked Tripp Carleton (Wake Forest) but took an easy, 6-0, 6-1, consolation win over Isade Juneau.
Pedro Graber (r-Sr., Santiago, Chile) dropped his Section C quarterfinal 6-3, 4-6, 7-5, against second seed and 63rd-ranked Simon Childs (Louisville) in the quarterfinals. Graber recovered in the consolation to knock off Jeremy Langer (Indiana) 7-5, 6-4. In a Section C consolation match, Corrado Degl’ Incerti Tocci (Jr., Reggio Emilia, Italy) lost, 6-0, 6-3, to Harry Menzies (South Carolina) then defaulted his next match.
Both Tech doubles teams dropped consolation final matches in their respective brackets. Graber/Tocci lost, 8-6, in Section A against Dominic Hodgson/Julian Sullivan (NC State) and Beck/Oliveira dropped their Section B contest, 9-8 (7), to Danny Kreyman/Connor Sherwood (Wake Forest).
The final round of singles will be played on Sunday at 10:30 a.m.
