DURHAM, N.C. – Two Virginia Tech players advanced Friday on the first day of the Fab Four Invite hosted by Duke University at the Cary Tennis Park in Cary, N.C. The event includes 11 schools being represented in the men’s draw.
The host Blue Devils are joined by players from East Tennessee State, Indiana, Louisville, North Carolina, North Carolina Central, North Carolina State, Radford, South Carolina, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest.
In singles, Will Beck (Sr., Potomac, Md.) cruised in his Section B singles match defeating Trey Chatman (N.C. Central), 6-1, 6-2. Beck will face top seed and 36th-ranked Tripp Carleton (Wake Forest) in the quarterfinals. Tech’s other singles win occurred in Section C as Pedro Graber (r-Sr., Santiago, Chile) came from a set down to defeat William Parker (North Carolina), 1-6, 6-0, 6-2. Graber will play second seed and 63rd-ranked Simon Childs (Louisville) in the quarterfinals.
Elsewhere, Lucas Oliveira (So., Sao Paulo, Brazil) dropped his opening match in Section A singles, 6-4, 6-4, to Alexander Kostanov (South Carolina). Oliveira will play David Holland (Duke) in the consolation round. Corrado Degl’ Incerti Tocci (Jr., Reggio Emilia, Italy) lost, 6-1, 6-2, in Section C against Cameron Ahari (North Carolina). He will play Harry Menzies (South Carolina) in the consolation bracket.
Both Tech doubles teams dropped opening round matches in their respective brackets before bouncing back to win consolation contests. Graber/Tocci lost a tight, 9-8 (5), decision against Ian Adkinson/Trey Carleton (Wake Forest) in their Section A opener, but defeated the 14th-ranked duo of Alejandro Calligari/Simon Childs (Louisville), 8-3, in the consolation. They will face Isade Juneau/Jeremy Langer (Indiana) in the Saturday consolation final at 9 a.m. Elsewhere, Beck/Oliveira dropped their Section B first round contest, 8-6, against David Holland/Chris Mengel (Duke), then defeated Trey Chatman/Jack Waissen (N.C. Central), 8-3. The pair will face Danny Kreyman/Connor Sherwood (Wake Forest) in the consolation final at 9 a.m.
Doubles will finish up with the finals at 9 a.m. on Saturday. Two rounds of singles will take place with matches set for 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. The final round of singles will be played on Sunday at 10:30 a.m.
