WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Four members of the Virginia Tech men’s team completed a very successful opening to the fall individual schedule Labor Day afternoon taking all four singles matches in two flights and two in the doubles flight of the D.C. Invitational. Monday’s action was played at the Woodmont Country Club. The Hokies recorded victories over players from Boise State in all matches.
The tournament format included two flights of singles and one flight of doubles and was played at two sites over two days with Sunday’s contest at the Columbia Country Club.
In Flight A, Will Beck (Sr., Potomac, Md.) defeated Jeff Mullens, 5-7, 6-1, 1-0 (8), and Flight champion Corrado Degl’ Incerti Tocci (Jr., Reggio Emilia, Italy) battled past Scott Sears, 6-7 (4), 7-5, 1-0 (9). In Flight B singles, Trpimir Kujundzic (So., Zagreb, Croatia) cruised past Erik Sheldon, 6-4, 6-2, and Flight champion Lucas Oliveira (So., Sao Paulo, Brazil) defeated Freddy Walsh, 6-4, 6-1.
In doubles, flight champs Kujundzic/Oliveira beat Sheldon/Walsh, 8-4, and Beck/Tocci, edged Mullen/Sears, 9-7.
The Hokies return to action next weekend, Sept. 10-12, when several members of the team will travel to Charlottesville, Va. to participate in the UVa Fall Classic.
