WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Virginia Tech had a very successful opening to the fall individual schedule Sunday afternoon taking all four singles matches in two flights of the D.C. Invitational at the Columbia Country Club. The Hokies recorded victories over players from Boise State in all matches.
The tournament format includes two flights of singles and one flight of doubles and is being played at two sites over two days. Monday’s matches will begin at 11:30 a.m. and be held at Woodmont Country Club.
In Flight A, Will Beck (Sr., Potomac, Md.) fought off a match point in defeating Scott Sears, 5-7, 6-3, 1-0 (10), and Corrado Degl’ Incerti Tocci (Jr., Reggio Emilia, Italy) cruised past Jeff Muller, 6-1, 6-3. In Flight B singles, Trpimir Kujundzic (So., Zagreb, Croatia) won a topsy-turvy contest, 6-2, 0-6, 1-0 (5), over Freddy Walsh and Lucas Oliveira (So., Sao Paulo, Brazil) defeated Erik Sheldon, 6-3, 6-1.
In doubles, Kujundzic/Oliveira edged Muller/Sears, 8-6, before the Broncos picked up their lone win of the afternoon as Sheldon/Walsh edged Beck/Tocci, 8-6.
