BLACKSBURG, Va. -- Two members of the Virginia Tech men’s tennis team have been named to the VaSID University Division All-State Men’s Tennis team. Yoann Re was named to the first-team and Luka Somen was a second-team selection. The team is selected by the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID).
Re (Sr., Verdun, Quebec, Canada), a two-time All-ACC selection, concluded the year ranked 58th in the final Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) national rankings and sixth in the Mideast Region. Re was also a participant in the NCAA Singles Championships for the second consecutive year and finished with 18 singles victories, including five over nationally ranked opponents. He concluded his Tech career with 82 singles and 72 doubles wins.
Somen (So., Karlovac, Croatia), an All-ACC selection and the 2009 ACC and VaSID Freshman of the Year, was ranked No. 74 nationally and No. 7 in the Atlantic Region at the end of the season. He posted a 25-10 singles record, including wins over 11 nationally ranked players at the No. 2 position. Somen teamed with Corrado Degl’ Incerti Tocci (So., Reggio Emilia, Italy) to register a 27-9 doubles record and 11-0 in ACC regular season dual matches.
Both players had key roles in leading Tech to a 16-8 overall record and a fourth consecutive appearance in the NCAA Championships. The Hokies ended the year with a No. 24 national ranking.
