BLACKSBURG, Virginia – Virginia Tech men’s tennis coach Jim Thompson has been named the Wilson/Intercollegiate Tennis Association Atlantic Region Coach of the Year. Thompson led the Hokies to a 16-8 record in 2010 and their fourth consecutive NCAA appearance.
Thompson, in his 12th year at Virginia Tech, has received several regional and national honors during his tenure. In Dec., 2009, he was one of 10 sectional winners of USTA/ITA Community Outreach Award for the Mid-Atlantic Section. Thompson previously was named the 2003 Northeast Region Coach of the Year as well as the 2003 BIG EAST Conference Coach of the Year. In 2000, he was selected to coach the Mid-Atlantic team in the Junior Davis Cup Competition.
The Hokies defeated No. 38 Vanderbilt, 4-0, Saturday in the first round of the NCAA Championships in Louisville, Ky., before being eliminated by No. 15 Louisville, 4-1, on Sunday afternoon. Tech’s Yoann Re (Sr., Verdun, Quebec, Canada), ranked No. 55 nationally, will see action in the NCAA Men’s Singles Championship May 26-31, in Athens, Ga.
