LOUISVILLE, Kentucky – The Virginia Tech men’s tennis team fell 4-1 on Sunday afternoon to No. 15 Louisville in the second round of the 2010 NCAA Men’s Tennis Championships. The first and second round matches were held at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center on the University of Louisville campus. The Hokies end their season at 16-8, while Louisville improves to 23-5. The Cardinals advance to the NCAA Championships, May 21-25, in Athens, Ga., where they will face No. 2 Tennessee (28-1) in the NCAA “Sweet 16” on Friday afternoon.
Tech, ranked No. 23 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll, dropped two of three matches to lose the doubles competition and lost three of the four completed singles matches in the loss.
In singles, Louisville increased the advantage to 3-0 as Will Beck (Jr., Potomac, Md.) dropped the No. 5 match, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3, to Andrew Carter and Yoann Re (Sr., Verdun, Quebec Canada), ranked No. 55, fell 6-4, 7-6, at No. 1 to 19th-ranked Austen Childs. Tech tallied its only point as Patrick Daciek (Severna Park, Md.) won, 6-3, 2-6, 6-2, at No. 4 versus Alejandro Calligari. Louisville clinched the win at No. 3 when Corrado Degl’ Incerti Tocci (So., Reggio Emilia, Italy) lost, 6-7, 7-5, 6-3, to No. 92 Simon Childs. The remaining two matches were halted in the third set once the team outcome had been decided.
In doubles, Louisville won the No. 1 match as Calligari/Simon Childs, ranked No. 26 nationally, defeated Beck/Daciek, 8-4, before Tech drew even with a, 8-4, win at No. 3 by Somen/Tocci over Gabriel/Hall. The Cardinals captured the doubles point at No. 2 as Jacques/Re lost, 8-6, to Austen Childs/Maksimcuk.
Re will participate in the NCAA Singles Championships in Athens, Ga., which begins on May 26.
