Hokies blank Commodores, 4-0
Tech faces Louisville in NCAA Second Round

LOUISVILLE, Kentucky – The Virginia Tech men’s tennis won a tight doubles competition and dominated singles play to defeat No. 38 Vanderbilt, 4-0, on Saturday afternoon in the first round of the 2010 NCAA Men’s Tennis Championships. The first and second round matches are being held at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center on the University of Louisville campus. The Hokies improve to 16-7 with the win, while Vanderbilt concluded the year with a 13-11 mark. Tech will face No. 15 Louisville on Sunday at 2 p.m., in the NCAA Second Round with the winner advancing to the NCAA Championships, May 21-25, in Athens, Ga.

Tech, ranked No. 23 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll, won two of three matches to take the doubles competition and captured all three of the completed singles matches for the victory.

After taking the doubles point, Patrick Daciek (So., Severna Park, Md.) gave Tech a 2-0 lead with his, 6-4, 6-3, win at No. 4 over Alex Zotov. The Hokies upped the advantage to 3-0 with a, 6-3, 6-1, victory at No. 6 by Lucas Oliveira (Fr., Sau Paulo Brazil). The contest was the first singles dual match for Oliveira in his collegiate career. Tech clinched the victory as Corrado Degl’ Incerti Tocci (So., Reggio Emilia, Italy) defeated Bryant Salcedo, 6-4, 6-1, at No. 3. The remaining three singles matches were halted once the Hokies had sealed the win.

In doubles, the Commordores took the No. 1 match as Baker/Zotov, ranked No. 46 nationally, defeated Beck/Daciek, 8-4. The Hokies bounced back to even the doubles with a, 8-5, victory at No. 2 by Jacques/Re over Lipman/Salcedo. Tech captured the doubles point as Degl’ Incerti Tocci/Somen overcame a 7-6 deficit to win the last three games in a, 9-7, win against Alex DiValerio/Paul in the No. 3 match. The win improved the Tech duo to 19-4 in dual matches this season.

Tech dropped a 5-2 decision at Louisville on March 10, 2010.
