BLACKSBURG, Va. - The Virginia Tech Athletics Department announced Friday the signing of men's tennis player Adam Lawton.
“Adam Lawton is exactly the type of person we like to recruit into our program,” said Virginia Tech men’s tennis coach Jim Thompson. “He is a very bright student, who is focused on getting a great education in our engineering department and at the same time, he is a highly motivated athlete who likes to compete. He will bring a great work ethic to our team and will be a top notch student as well. We are thrilled that he choose to come to Virginia Tech.”
Lawton (6-2, 160, RH) began his training in Havana, Cuba, between the ages of 7-11, before moving to St. Petersburg, Russia for two years. During the past six years, Lawton has lived in Madrid, Spain and trained with former Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) ranked Spanish players Pepe Imaz, Sergio Gomez-Barrios and his current coach, Javier Perez.
The Tech signee has a current under-18 ranking in Spain of No. 52 and is No. 252 including all ages. He recently help his team win the Junior Team Championships of Madrid against their arch-rivals Tenispain. Lawton won two under 16 titles and has captured championships in four under 18 and two all age events in Spain. Lawton has also played tennis in Madrid with former Virginia Tech standout, Nicolas Delgado de Robles.
