CARY, N.C.– For the second time in less than a week Virginia Tech dropped a tight match to 24th-ranked Georgia Tech losing 4-3 on Friday afternoon in the quarterfinals of the 2010 ACC Championships. The tournament is being held at the Cary Tennis Center. The Hokies fell to 15-7 with the loss, while Georgia Tech improved to 17-6 and will face No. 1 Virginia in the semifinals on Saturday.
Tech, ranked No. 20 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll, lost the doubles competition and split three of the six singles matches in the defeat.
After dropping the doubles point, Tech took a 2-1 lead as Corrado Degl’ Incerti Tocci (So., Reggio Emilia, Italy) won the No. 3 match, 6-4, 6-0, against Eliot Potvin and Patrick Daciek (So., Serverna Park, Md.) defeated Miguel Muguruza, 6-4, 6-3, in the No. 4 contest. The Yellow Jackets knotted the match at 2-2 when Sebastien Jacques (Jr., Magog, Quebec, Canada) fell, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 6, but the Hokies reclaimed the lead with Luka Somen’s (Karlovac, Croatia) win at No. 2, 7-5, 6-3, versus Kevin King.
Georgia Tech tied the match up once more as Yoann Re (Sr., Verdun, Quebec, Canada) dropped his No. 1 match, 1-6, 6-1, 6-4, to Guillermo Gomez and the Yellow Jackets took the contest when Will Beck (Jr., Potomac, Md.) dropped the No. 5 contest, 6-7 (7), 6-2, 6-1. against Juan Spir.
Georgia Tech won the first two completed matches to open the day and claimed the doubles point. Beck/Daciek lost, 8-3, at No. 1 to King/Spir and the Yellow Jackets took the point as Somen/Tocci lost, 8-5, at No. 3 versus O’Brien/Gomez. The loss was the first of the year for the Tech duo against ACC competition.
Tech will now wait for a bid to the NCAA Tournament with the regionals being held May 14-15 on 16 campus sites.
