CARY, N.C - Virginia Tech experienced no problems Thursday afternoon in recording a 4-0 win over Boston College in the first round of the 2010 ACC Men’s Championship. The event is being played at the Cary Tennis Center. The Hokies, seeded fifth in the tournament, improve to 15-6 on the year and advance to a Friday quarterfinal match against fourth-seeded and 24th-ranked Georgia Tech at noon. Boston College, the No. 10 seed, concludes the year with a 9-16 record.
Tech, ranked No. 20 nationally, won both of the completed doubles matches for the first point of the day, then swept three singles contests for the victory.
In singles, Corrado Degl’ Incerti Tocci (Reggio Emilia, Italy) took the No. 3 match, 6-2, 6-2, over Alex Skinner to give Tech a 2-0 advantage. The Hokies closed out the match as Patrick Daciek (Severna Park, Md.) defeated Erik Kreutzer, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 4 and Will Beck (Jr., Potomac, Md.) clinched the win with a, 6-2, 7-5, victory against Jonathan Schroeder. The remaining three singles contests were halted in progress once the Hokies had clinched the victory.
Tech won the doubles point to open the contest as Luka Somen (So., Karlovac, Croatia)/Tocci cruised past Thomas Nolan/Davison, 8-1, at No. 3 before Beck/Daciek claimed the point with a, 9-7, win at No. 1 versus Skinner/Schroeder. The remaining doubles match was halted once the Hokies had clinched the point.
Georgia Tech edged Tech, 4-3, last Sunday in Atlanta, Ga.
