GREENSBORO, N.C. – Virginia Tech’s Yoann Re and Luka Somen have been named to the 2010 All-ACC Men’s Tennis Team as announced today by Commissioner John D. Swofford. Duke’s Henrique Cunha was as the Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Tennis Player of the Year and the Freshman of the year. Brian Boland, who guided Virginia to its fourth straight unbeaten regular season in conference play and the No. 1 spot in the national rankings, was voted ACC Coach of the Year for the third straight season and the fourth time overall.
Re (Sr., Verdun, Quebec, Canada), ranked No. 53 nationally in singles, was named to the elite team for the third time after completing an outstanding regular season in which he defeated three top-25 players and was named the ACC Player of the Week on one occasion.
Somen (So., Karlovac, Croatia), ranked No. 73, was selected to the team for the first time after being named the 2009 ACC Freshman of the Year. He teamed with Corrado Degl’ Incerti Tocci (So., Reggio Emilia, Italy) to post a perfect 11-0 record in ACC doubles matches.
Boland’s Cavaliers placed a conference-high four players on this year’s 18-member All-ACC team, including three-time selection Sanam Singh and repeat selection Michael Shabaz. Florida State’s Jean-Yves Aubone, Gerogia Tech’s Guillermo Gomez, North Carolina’s Clay Donato, Virginia Tech’s Yoann Re and Wake Forest’s Steve Forman are other three-time selections on this year’s All-ACC team.
Duke’s Cunha finished the regular season undefeated in ACC play at the No. 1 spot, posting an 8-0 record. He owns an 18-3 record against ranked opponents. Cunha has won 15 straight matches and is 30-5 overall heading into the ACC Men’s Championship, which gets under way today at Cary (N.C.) Tennis Park.
The ACC Men’s Tennis Championship opens today with four first-round matches. Play continues throughout the weekend, concluding with Sunday’s 11 a.m. title match. Virginia Tech will play Boston College today at noon today in a first-round match.
