BLACKSBURG, Va. -- The Virginia Tech men’s tennis team play the final two home matches of the regular season today and Sunday against Wake Forest and NC State, respectively. The matches will be played at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center on the Virginia Tech campus. Today’s match against No. 18 Wake Forest will be begin at 3 p.m., and Sunday’s contest versus No. 47 NC State is scheduled for noon.
Virginia Tech (11-5, 4-3), ranked No. 23 in this week’s Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll, defeated Virginia Commonwealth, 5-2, on Wednesday at home in the Hokies’ final non-conference contest. The Hokies are led by No. 38 Yoann Re (Sr., Verdun, Quebec, Canada), No. 61 Luka Somen (So., Karlovac, Croatia) and No. 117 Sebastien Jacques (Jr., Magog, Quebec, Canada). Jacques/Re are ranked No. 74 nationally in doubles.
Wake Forest (11-6, 5-2) had a four-match winning streak halted with a 4-3 home loss to No. 20 Duke earlier in the week. The Demon Deacons feature three nationally ranked players including No. 42 Tripper Carleton, No. 56 Steven Forman and No. 101 Iain Atkinson. Atkinson/Foreman are ranked No. 14 nationally in doubles. Wake Forest defeated Tech, 6-1, last year in Winston-Salem, N.C. The first 100 fans to arrive and receive a free deck of Virginia Tech playing cards.
NC State (12-10, 1-6) will visit No. 1 Virginia prior to Sunday’s match with the Hokies. The Wolfpack have dropped four straight including losses last week at No. 22 Florida State (5-2) and at No. 51 Miami (5-2). Jamie Pulgar, ranked No. 70 nationally in singles, is the top player for the Wolfpack. Tech defeated NC State, 4-3, last year in Raleigh, N.C. Tech senior Yoann Re will be honored prior to Sunday’s match and the first 50 fans to arrive will receive a free VT knit hat.
Following this weekend’s action, Tech will conclude the regular season on April 18 at No. 40 Clemson and on April 20 at No. 24 Georgia Tech.
