Tech defeats VCU, 5-2

BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech men’s tennis team ended a two-match losing streak with a 5-2 win Wednesday afternoon at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center over Virginia Commonwealth. Tech improved to 11-5 with the win while VCU fell to 10-11.

The Hokies, ranked No. 23 in the this week’s Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll, won two of the three doubles matches for the first point, then took four of the six singles contests for the victory.

In singles, Will Beck (Jr., Potomac, Md.) gave Tech a 2-0 lead with his, 6-4, 6-2, win at No. 5 over Camill Solomon and the Hokies increased the advantage as Corrado Degl’ Incerti Tocc (So., Reggio Emilia, Italy) took the No. 4 match, 6-1, 7-5, against Max Wennakoski. Patrick Daciek (So., Severna Park, Md.) did the honors by clinching the dual match with a, 6-3, 1-6, 6-3, victory at No. 3 versus Krisztian Krocsko.

In other singles results, the Rams recorded their first point as Yoann Re (Sr., Verdun, Quebec, Canada), ranked No. 38 nationally, lost, 6-2, 1-6, 6-3, to 25th-ranked Thibaut Charron in the No. 1 match. VCU picked up its final point at No. 2 when Luka Somen (So., Karlovac, Croatia), ranked No. 61, was upset by Tim Johannsen, 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (5). Sebastien Jacques (Jr., Magog, Quebec, Canada), ranked No. 117, provided the final point for Tech with a 4-6, 6-2, 6-4, win at No. 6 over Filip Svensson

In doubles, Somen/Tocci improved their record to 21-6 with by taking the No. 2 match, 8-5, over Svennson/Wennakoski and Tech clinched the first point of day as Jacques/Re, ranked No. 74 nationally, won 8-3 at No. 2 against Johannsen/Perman. The Rams won the No. 1 contest as Beck/Daciek fell, 7-6 (6), versus Charron/Krocskov.

Tech returns to action this weekend with home matches against No. 18 Wake Forest in a Friday, 3 p.m. match, and No. 47 NC State on Sunday at noon.
