BLACKSBURG, Va. -- As the Virginia Tech men’s tennis team continues its successful season, each match gains in importance and this weekend will be no exception. The 18th-ranked Hokies will play Friday at No. 27 Duke in a 3 p.m. contest and then travel to Chapel Hill, N.C. for a Sunday match at 1 p.m., against No. 20 North Carolina.
Virginia Tech (10-3, 4-1) had two impressive home victories last weekend over No. 22 Florida State (5-2) and No. 49 Miami (5-2). The Hokies are currently in third place in the ACC trailing No. 1 Virginia (5-0) followed by the second-place Blue Devils (3-0)
Yoann Re (Sr., Verdun, Quebec, Canada) moved up to No. 38 in this week’s national singles rankings. Re is 4-1 in ACC singles contests and has defeated six nationally ranked opponents. Luka Somen (So., Karlovac, Croatia) also has a 4-1 record in ACC matches and moved up to No. 61 nationally this week. Soman has posted an impressive 21-6 dual match record this season. Sebastien Jacques (Jr., Magog, Quebec, Canada), ranked No. 117, continues his solid play at the No. 6 position.
Duke (9-5, 3-0) defeated N.C. State, 6-1, Wednesday afternoon for its fifth straight win. Last week the Blue Devils opened ACC play with a 6-1 win at Boston College followed by a 5-2 victory at Maryland.
Tech is 2-3 against Duke since entering the conference in 2005 and has defeated the Blue Devils the last two times the teams have met.
North Carolina (13-3, 3-1) dropped a 5-2 home match against No. 24 Wake Forest on Tuesday which snapped a eight-match winning streak. Tech is 0-5 versus the Tar Heels in ACC regular season matches.
Following Sunday’s match, Tech will host Virginia Commonwealth on Wednesday, April 7, in a 2 p.m. contest.
