BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech men’s tennis team won a hard-fought 5-2 decision Friday afternoon over No. 22 Florida State at the Burleson-Burleson Tennis Center. The Hokies improved 9-3 overall and 3-1 in the ACC, while the Seminoles fell to 11-4 and 4-1 in the conference.
Tech, ranked No. 20 in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association national poll, lost two of the three doubles contests to drop the first point of the day, but bounced back to take five of the six singles matches for the victory.
After winning the doubles point, Florida State took a 2-0 lead as Tech’s Corrado Degl’ Incerti Tocci (So., Reggio Emilia, Italy) lost, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 3 against 71st-ranked Clint Bowles. Tech got on the board as Yoann Re (Sr., Verdun, Quebec, Canada) won his No. 1 match, 6-3, 4-2 (ret.) over No. 22 Jean-Yves Aubone and evened the match at 2-2 with a 6-3, 6-2, win by Luka Somen (So., Karlovac, Croatia), ranked No. 67, at No. 2 over No. 48 Vahid Mirzadeth.
Tech took a 3-2 lead as Sebastien Jacques (Jr., Magog, Quebec, Canada), ranked No. 107, defeated Jordan Kelly-Houston, 6-3, 6-3, at No. 6. The Hokies clinched the win at No. 4 with a tough, 7-6 (5), 3-6, 6-4, win by Patrick Daciek (So., Severna Park, Md.) over Connor Smith. Will Beck (Jr., Potomac, Md.) provided the final margin with a come-from-behind, 6-7 (4), 6-4, 6-4, win versus Audres Bucaro in the No. 5 match.
In doubles, Somen/Tocci took the No. 3 match, 8-6, over Bucaro/Anderson Reed, however the Seminoles evened the competion as Beck/Daciek lost, 8-4, at No. 1 to 70th-ranked Mirzadeth/Smith. Florida State took the point when Jacques/Re dropped the No. 2 contest, 8-6, to 60th-ranked Bucaro/Reed.
Tech will be back in action on Sunday, March 28, as they will continue ACC action, hosting #49 Miami. The match will begin at noon at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center.
